Walks & Trails in September
September is a beautiful time to explore the walking routes around Ambleside, with cooler days, quieter trails and the first autumn colours beginning to appear across the fells.
Here are a few of our favourite walks from Ambleside, perfect for experiencing the charm of the Lake District this September.

Ambleside to Grasmere via the Coffin Route
One of our favourite September walks is the historic Coffin Route from Ambleside to Grasmere. This scenic 3.8-mile trail takes you past Rydal Hall and Rydal Mount, with beautiful views across Rydal Water and the surrounding fells along the way.
As the landscape begins to change for autumn, the woodland paths and lakeside views make this route particularly beautiful at this time of year. Finish in the charming village of Grasmere, where you can wander the shops, stop for a coffee and pick up some famous Grasmere Gingerbread before hopping on the bus back to Ambleside.
With the Salutation in the heart of Ambleside, it’s an easy autumn adventure to enjoy straight from our doorstep.

For Something More Adventurous: Loughrigg Fell & Rydal Cave
For a longer September hike, take on Loughrigg Fell and Rydal Cave. This roughly 10km circular route from Ambleside climbs to the 335m summit of Loughrigg Fell, rewarding you with far-reaching views across Windermere and the surrounding fells before continuing towards the impressive Rydal Cave.
September is a particularly beautiful time to tackle the route, with cooler walking temperatures, softer autumn light and the landscape beginning to change colour. Rydal Cave brings the ultimate autumn atmosphere, with its dramatic rocky surroundings. A Taste of the New Season- Dining – Welcome to the Ambleside Salutation Hotel & Spa
