Autumn in Ambleside: October in the Lake District
October is one of the most beautiful times to experience the Lake District.
Autumn is now in full swing, bringing crisp mornings, golden leaves and rich autumn colours across Ambleside and the surrounding fells. The days might be getting a little shorter, but there’s something particularly special about this time of year in the Lakes.
From autumn walks straight from our doorstep and waterfalls at their best to cosy evenings, seasonal dining and time spent relaxing in the spa, October at the Salutation is all about embracing the season.
Autumn Walks Worth Exploring
October is one of the most beautiful times to pull on your walking boots and explore the Lakes, with changing colours, crisp mornings and quieter trails.
For a classic autumn walk, Tarn Hows is hard to beat. The gentle two-mile circular route takes you around the tarn, surrounded by woodland and views towards the fells – particularly beautiful as the leaves begin to change.
Or venture into Great Langdale and Blea Tarn for some of the most impressive scenery in the Lakes. The walk at Blea Tarn is relatively gentle, with incredible views towards the Langdale Pikes reflected across the water. At around 1.8 miles, it’s a lovely option if you want the views without committing to a full day on the fells.
Closer to the hotel, you can also wander up to Stock Ghyll Force, explore around Rydal Water, or simply head out from Ambleside and see where the autumn scenery takes you.

Rainy Days in Ambleside
Of course, October in the Lake District can bring its fair share of rainy days – but that doesn’t mean staying in your room.
Embrace a slower afternoon with pottery painting at The Kiln House in Ambleside, browse the town’s independent shops and cafés, or retreat back to the Salutation for a few hours in the spa.
Take a dip in the pool, warm up in the sauna and steam room, relax in the outdoor hydrotherapy pool and watch the autumn weather roll in around you.
Then all that’s left to do is get ready for dinner and settle in for a cosy evening at the hotel.

A New Season, A New Menu
Autumn has arrived in our kitchen too, with our new dinner menu now available at the Salutation.
After a day spent exploring Ambleside and the surrounding fells, head back to the hotel, get cosy and enjoy an evening of seasonal dining. Our new menu brings together comforting dishes and seasonal flavours, making October the perfect time to settle in for dinner after a day in the Lakes.
